Howard Webb to handle Real Madrid - Bayern München

42-year old Howard Webb of England has been designated to take control over Wednesday's UEFA Champions League semifinal at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid and FC Bayern München are about to meet for the second time after 2011/12 in this stage of the competition fighting for the honour to join Lisbon final in May.

A former sergeant and professional referee, Webb was chosen by FIFA to attend Brazil's World Cup 2014 in the midst of January. It is Webb's third semifinal in a row, having handled Real Madrid's 2:0 win but equally defeat vs Borussia Dortmund last year and Bayern München's win against, yes, Real Madrid in 2012. For the Englishman it is already the sixth Champions League match of this season, three of them involving Real Madrid (1:1 at Juventus Turin and 6:1 at Schalke 04). The German champions won't be glad if they believe in statistics: in 2010, Webb oversaw their Champions League final loss against Internazionale in Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
His standard assistant referees Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann will run his lines, while Elite referee Martin Atkinson and Anthony Taylor have been selected as additional assistant referees. Stephen Child will function as fourth official.
What makes this designation even more vital is the presence of UEFA's Chief Officer of Refereeing Pierluigi Collina who will accompany and assess the match officials' performance and probably give them vital advices with regard to the pending World Cup.

Swedish World Cup referee Jonas Eriksson has been nominated to take charge of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg between Atlético Madrid and Chelsea FC at Estadio Vicente Calderón. After having taken charge of Manchester City - FC Barcelona in the Round of 16, the Spurs' defeat against Benfica SL in Europa League and finally Bayern München's 3:1 win over Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinals, it is the fourth match in a row for Eriksson with English involvement. He will be assisted by the same quintet that was already active in the quarterfinals, featuring his regular assistant referees Mathias Klasenius and Daniel Wärnmark on the sidelines, Stefan Johannesson and Markus Strömbergsson on the goallines and Daniel Gustavsson as the fourth official.

At the same time it has very likely turned out that the Champions League Final 2014 will not be controlled by the professional referee from Sigtuna taking into account that it has never happened that a Champions League semifinal official handled the consecutive final. Depending on Bayern München's result, Björn Kuipers and Felix Brych could be potential names in the run for Lisbon final and, as usual, a certain Serbian could maybe surprise us all.

Ángel Di María Missed Penalty By Infringing Law 14

Last Tuesday's UEFA Champions League second leg between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid gave further and ample device that you should never give up after a clear loss suffered in the first leg as a team. Having been down 0:3 in Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, last year's Wembley finalists almost managed to draw level with the Madrilenians. Hence, the match was highly challenging but very well handled by Slovenian Damir Skomina and his team who awarded a totally justified penalty in favour of Real Madrid in the early stages of the game (deliberate handball). But they missed something quite peculiar in this process.

As you can see, Real Madrid player Ángel di María failed to convert this penalty into a goal by slipping on the wet ground and meeting his match in goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller. What the replay also unbosoms is that the Argentinian attacker deflected his own left-foot shot with his right forward section of foot. And this case is clearly defined in Law 14:

"If, after the penalty kick has been taken, the kicker touches the ball again (except with his hands) before it has touched another player, an indirect free-kick is awarded to the opposing team and the kick is to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred."

For this reason, Damir Skomina should have stopped play and awarded an indirect free-kick to Borussia Dortmund. Overall he can be quite lucky that di María did not score from the penalty spot although one may raise doubts whether anybody had protested. Naturally these words should not be understood as anatomical seeming dissection of this incident, neither should it blame the referee and his assistants for not detecting it. On the field of play, this is (almost) impossible to detect, also keeping in mind that the assistant referee has to focus on the 2nd last defender line, the additional assistant referee on the goal-line and the referee on the penalty kick taker and the forward movement of the ball. And surely, considering the spirit of the match at the highest level of (commercialized) football, such Laws of the Game tend to play no role - for some good reasons. But technically considered, this situation has certainly been quite odd.

What's the hurry?

Champions League Quarterfinals: Proença and Skomina in charge

Pierluigi Collina and company have defined the referees for the second legs of Champions League's quarterfinals to be played on Tuesday evening.

Portuguese Pedro Proença will control the match between Chelsea FC and Paris SG. The Blues will have to recover from a 1:3 defeat suffered in the first leg which promises an intense and atmospherical game at Stamford Bridge.
While this tie thus is not decided yet, Borussia Dortmund will play Real Madrid without having huge prospect to recover from the clear 0:3-loss of the first match. Slovenian Damir Skomina has been assigned to handle this match being again assisted by Italian Gianluca Cariolato on the far sideline.
